for diffusers I use found glass. some wonderful examples waiting to be made into LED lamps.
This (model B or mod b) open frame LED lamp uses a large block of glass as the diffuser. The frame itself is 2x4 wood. An aluminum wrap inside with two LEDs make this a very bright emitter.
